  • Biblionasium.com keeps track of books that students are reading and, at teacher discretion, allows students to share recommendations and book reviews.
  • Bookshare, an online library with over 170,000 titles, free to those whose disabilities that prevent them from reading
  • Booksource Classroom Organizer is a website and smartphone/tablet app that work together to keep track of your books, which makes it easier to let kids check them out.
  • Children’s Storybooks Online: Illustrated children’s books for all ages
  • Flipboard, available for free on Android and iOS devices, asks users what their interests are, then provides articles which match that interest.
  • Giggle Poetry: Hundreds of poems created by students
  • Newsela enables teachers and parents to direct student reading, and allows selection of news articles by reading level and topic.
  • Pottermore website offers opportunities for high interest reading
  • Read 2 Me  Allows full speech synthesis for an entire library of texts including your *.txt files.
  • Who Was” series of biographies, while not an app, are well regarded and popular even with struggling readers.
  • Wikipedia – Simple English — choose “Simple English” from the language menu in the left column of a Wikipedia page
  • Word Magic; teaches reading at a preschool level. Award winning.
  • The Writing Machine; Introduces pre-literacy concepts including letter recognition and discrimination and how pictures and words go together.

  • Audible.com provides audio books
  • Books Should Be Free offers free audio books
  • Bookshare, an online library with over 170,000 titles, free to those whose disabilities that prevent them from reading in a traditional manner
  • Read2Go; works with Bookshare
  • Read 2 Me  Allows full speech synthesis for an entire library of texts including your *.txt files.
  • Lit2Go offers free audio books
  • NaturalReader website; type or paste text in to hear it read
  • ReadTheWords allows you to make recordings
  • Select & Speak extension on Google Chrome
  • Signed Stories, books presented in video format, accompanied by narration and sign language
  • Snap & Read Universal reads text aloud and provides translation services too
  • StoryLine Online has Screen Actor’s Guide members narrating video stories of popular children’s books

  • Co:Writer, an extension for Google Chrome which uses word prediction technology to help students better express their ideas. Includes speech recognition.
  • Dipity to make timelines
  • Edublogs is geared toward older students. Students must have an e-mail to join, and sign themselves up using an invite code from the teacher

  • Glogster to make interactive multimedia posters
  • Kidblog is a free website/app tool that does not require student e-mail addresses to set up accounts, although the teacher must provide an e-mail address.
