- Booksource Classroom Organizer is a website and smartphone/tablet app that work together to keep track of your books, which makes it easier to let kids check them out.
- Children’s Storybooks Online: Illustrated children’s books for all ages
- Flipboard, available for free on Android and iOS devices, asks users what their interests are, then provides articles which match that interest.
- Giggle Poetry: Hundreds of poems created by students
- Newsela enables teachers and parents to direct student reading, and allows selection of news articles by reading level and topic.
- Pottermore website offers opportunities for high interest reading
- Read 2 Me Allows full speech synthesis for an entire library of texts including your *.txt files.
- Who Was” series of biographies, while not an app, are well regarded and popular even with struggling readers.
- Wikipedia – Simple English — choose “Simple English” from the language menu in the left column of a Wikipedia page
- Word Magic; teaches reading at a preschool level. Award winning.
- The Writing Machine; Introduces pre-literacy concepts including letter recognition and discrimination and how pictures and words go together.
